Calories that burn fat

Yes, it’s true. Not all calories are the same. You might be able to eat the same amount of calories you are eating at the moment and still lose fat (of course if it’s not an absurd amount of calories).

Some foods can destroy your metabolism, making your body slow down. Making it hard to lose fat, doesn’t matter how hard you work.

The same happens when you follow drastic diets but I’ll cover this another time, let’s talk about the calories.

That is why some people eat the correct amount of calories they should eat and still not losing weight or it happens so slow they give up before reaching their goals, specially on those “diet point systems” where you can eat whatever you want as long as you don’t exceed your daily quote.

The difference is where you get your calories from (carbohydrates, protein or fat). Some calories can help you to BURN calories.

This happens because calories from different foods act different on your body. When you eat fats for example, your metabolism will speed up approximately 5%. It means that for every 100 calories of fat you eat, your body will use 5 of its own calories to process what you ate. (Not all fats are bad. I’ll also explain that in other post)

If you eat carbohydrates your body will speed up its metabolism in approximately 10% (a lot less if you eat sugar or other refined carbs as these start to be absorbed in your mouth). It means if you eat a 600 kcal meal with only carbohydrates your body will use 60kcal to digest it.

Now here is the trick. Some of you probably heard before someone advising you to eat more protein and less carbohydrate if you want to lose weight or lose fat. One of the reasons is because your body need to speed up its metabolism by up to 30% to digest it. Yes, if you eat the same 600 kcal meal made mainly by protein your body will absorb only 420 kcal as the other 180 kcal will be used to digest this protein. It’s not easy for your body to digest protein. It takes time, making you feel full for longer and requires more energy to be broken down as it’s more complex than carbohydrates.

Have you ever wondered how some people eat loads, don’t exercise and still not putting weight? It’s the kind of food you eat (it’s also how and when you eat but I explain another time).

Just don’t start eating only protein and cutting completely carbohydrates and fat from your diet as your body needs it to stay healthy. You just need to find the right balance. To stay healthy it’s important to have a varied diet (and exercise of course!).
